Special Notice: Long Term Construction Closure on the Brooklyn Bridge
NYC Department of Transportation (DOT) is performing rehabilitation work on the Brooklyn Bridge ramps and approaches, which are in urgent need of repair. To facilitate this work, DOT has announced that the Brooklyn Bridge will be closed to Manhattan-bound traffic overnight, beginning on Monday, August 23 and will continue until the project is completed in 2014. All Manhattan-bound traffic will be detoured to the Manhattan Bridge or other crossings. All Brooklyn-bound traffic will be maintained, and there will be no closure of the pedestrian/cycling promenade. All work will occur during off-peak hours, and the bridge will be reopened for traffic in both directions each morning.
Closure Times: Mondays to Fridays – closure will begin at 11 PM and lanes will reopen at 6 AM.
Saturdays – closure will begin at 12:01 AM and lanes will reopen at 7 AM
Sundays – closure will begin at 12:01 AM and lanes will reopen at 9 AM.

Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA Offers Free NYS YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program (Y-DPP)
Y-DPP is designed to help in the prevention of diabetes for eligible participants, who have pre-diabetes, by helping them set personal lifestyle goals. The group program meets in one hour sessions for 16 weeks, covering diet, exercise, and behavior modification to help participants achieve two primary goals: reduce and maintain individual weight loss by 5-7%, and participate in regular physical activity.
Program starts Tuesday, August 24 at 6:30 PM in the Bedford Stuyvesant YMCA (1121 Bedford Avenue).
Individuals who are at risk for pre-diabetes and are interested in Y-DPP should consult their physician to receive a referral for the program.

NYC Department of Education (DOE) Releases Gifted & Talented (G&T) Application for 4th and 5th Graders
Please be aware that the DOE has released the application for gifted and talented seats for NYC public school students entering 4th grade in a K – 5 school or entering 5th grade in a K – 8 school. In order to be eligible for the G&T program, a child must have scored a level 4 in both ELA and Math on the state standardized test. Parents can access their child’s ELA and Math test scores at https://arisparentlink.org/parentlink. For students who are not currently in NYC public schools, parents may complete the non-public school application and submit the application along with comparable ELA and Math standardized test scores. For students who are currently in charter schools, parents should contact the charter school to access their child’s scores.
Deadline for the application is August 27, 2010.

10-week course is designed to teach participants about investing in stocks, bonds and mutual funds. All participants must have $750 in a Savings Account by the date of application submission.
